Thread: Canadian Home Workshop Show

  1. Canadian Home Workshop Show

Well, the first day of the CHW Show 2010 Ver 1.0 is over and by all accounts a success. The place was packed for most of the day, in some areas you really had to squeeze through the crowds. There were all the usual interactive areas for attendee project builds which seemed to be very popular.

Of course, all the usual suspects were there... I had a great chat with Ed from Manitoulin, Richard from Smithville and I connected and caught up on the latest. Bill McDonald was there and stopped by to chat - was great seeing you again Bill, I'm going to try to make it to the Breakfast on sunday for a visit again. Art Mulder was there in the kids section again with Mike. This is the place to meet your woodworking friends for sure - I had breakfast with Benoit Bissonette from Renovation Bricolage and Carl Duguay from Toolreviews.ca The rest of the gang from CHW were there - Douglas T brought along is new son Hunter (a really cute kid!) and I suspect he was already helping him select his first set of tools...

And now the bit about the CHW Show 2010 Ver1.0.... The most interesting piece of news is that the next Canadian Home Workshop Show will not be next february but that we will be having another one this year, 2010, at the end of november - sort of CHW 2010 Ver 2.0. With the sale of CHW to Quarto, the new publisher has decided to move the show to the fall and have it on the same weekend as the Cottage Life, Outdoor Life and Explore shows. Your $14 dollar admission to one of these shows will allow you visit the other three as well. They will all be held at the International Center and is sure sounds like an interesting proposition.

Mack C was no where to be seen! Maybe tomorrow I hope - I am going to be hounding him for a quick pen turning lesson - the guys in the Delta Booth have asked the magazine crewl to drop by an turn a pen during the weekend....

Hi Michael; I will definitely be at breakfast. As well, I will put a blank together today that we can turn after breakfast tomorrow on my nearly new ONEWAY 1224! (Gloat, Gloat)

Over all, I thought the show was pretty good this year. Chatted with Michael K, Gord Graff, Art Mulder, Turaj, and Ryan Shervall at the Masters workshop. I wasn't really looking at buying anything particular but I buy a book on small box making and a bag full of drill bits from the bit lady. I had a good looking red head on my arm who wanted to she Mag Ruffman. We did that and she sat with me during all the other talks that I wanted to see. I stayed until about 4:30 and payed for it all the way home in traffic.

It'd be nice if the show here in Abbotsford would be as good as the one I hear about in TO.

Harald, I'm new to these woodworking shows; what is the show in Abbotsford, and when? Does anyone know if there is an overall listing of these kinds of shows somewhere - perhaps even on this website - that I don't know about?

Here is a link to the outfit that does the show:

It hasn't been updated for 2010 yet, but it usually happens in late September or October at the Tradex in Abbotsford. $12 to get in.

I went on Friday at the last show, and wasn't overly impressed, though I did buy a couple of things at a good price.

There is a list on the site under the wood show tab in the navigation bar on the left - or just click here It is not complete as there were still shows unconfirmed as of my last update. I should have some more up later this week once the CHW show is over.

    Hi Hannah,

They've had the shows in Victoria in the past, but they weren't so hot, although I did really enjoy the Rob Cosman demo for doing dovetails by hand. (I even picked up a knife handmade by Mike Komick that I use most when I carve.) Maybe one day they will have one in Victoria again, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that one. The Abbotsford one is your best bet.

The Vancouver show is not as elaborate as the CHW show and going there from the island is a rather long and expensive trip - We should consider going as a group should there be any interest.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies, and showing this newbie around the site! Sounds like the CHW show that a lot of you are at now, is The show to be at.
